4th Annual Cork Harbour Cycle is most Successful yet

The fourth annual Cork Harbour Cycle took place on the 8th of January and was a great success with over 250 cyclists doing the 25 mile waterfront route around the harbour on a lovely winters day.

The numbers were almost double last years and there is now a large percentage of the cyclists are women. Many were out on their bikes for the first time since last year and those that were out for the first time were delighted at how beautiful the route is.

Cork is blessed with a magnificent harbour with extensive public access to the waterfront and 8 miles of it on quiet paths. There was one casualty on an icy patch, Sean Walsh took a fall but he will be recovered in time for his climb to Everest base camp in a few weeks. The cyclists over the four years have totaled over 15,000 miles so one casualty to date is not a bad record. Sean was wearing his helmet which he says saved him, so Childaid will be looking for everyone to wear helmets next year.

'021 Cycles' came up from Carrigaline to do emergency cycle repairs and rescued three cyclists needing puncture repairs.

The cycle raised over € 16,000 last year for Childaid, so with the extra numbers taking part this year it should exceed €20,000. It will take the sponsorship some weeks to come in, and we will keep you updated here as the funds come in.

STOP PRESS

As of May 2006, over €28,000 has been raised, greatly exceeded the target for this years event. It's even likely that more will be collected in the coming weeks.

Childaid would like to thank all those who cycled, contributed and worked on the day, and who have made this the single most successful event of it's kind in Childaid's annual fundraising diary.
